LSC Week 13: Family Business

"What did we learn?"

The Coen brothers deliver a masterclass in controlled chaos here, crafting a comedy that thrives on absurdity, coincidence, and spectacular human incompetence. I love how the film juggles multiple bizarre plot threads that constantly collide and derail one another and by the time everything wraps up, nothing has really been learned and no grand message emerges. This lack of a clear moral is part of the joke, and makes the journey to the end all the more fun.

What truly elevates the film is its ensemble cast, all of whom seem to be operating on the same wonderfully unhinged wavelength. Every performance is dialed in just right, with razor-sharp timing and impeccable line delivery. The dialogue is relentless, dry, and effortlessly funny, often landing its biggest laughs through sheer awkwardness rather than punchlines.

Ultimately, Burn After Reading is a joyful exercise in narrative futility and comedic precision. It is clever without being smug, chaotic without being messy, endlessly entertaining and a welcome breath of fresh air between Titicut Follies and Shoah.
