A lot better than pretty much any exorcism film from the last couple years, which I know isn’t hard. Great performances, entertaining story and character moments.
if a catholic demon possessed me, i would just convert to another religion. rip to all possessed babes, but i'm different
[Road to DARK NUNS (2025) – THE PRIESTS (2015) Spin-off]
After what he did in Exhuma, Jang Jae-hyun once made a nice The Exorcist movie. Although this is honestly not what I was looking for, there's a lot of positive aspects that make it different from any horror films with themes about exorcism. I like something jumpy, scary, and shocking but I didn't find any of those in this one. But what makes it likable to me is that it didn't showcase too much demon and jumpscares, the exorcism sequence feels realistic even if it doesn't invent something special but at least the plot is compelling to follow. I had a good time watching Park So-dam shrieks and snarls.
Hello Letterboxd people. I love to take the privilege of ending my mini marathon with one of my favorite foreign actresses, Park So-dam. I was introduced to her from watching The Silenced, and because of a friend on here saw her brilliant performance as Jessica in Parasite. And I even seen Phantom more times than that movie. Here is one of her earlier break out performances at just age 24.
THE PRIESTS
There is a Biblical related disturbance occurring in Seoul South Korea. Father Kim ( Kim You-seok ) is trying to convince his superiors that a exorcism is required to one of his flock from his Seoul congregation. But the Priests are really pissed that Father Kim notified the…
A year after his proof of concept short, 12th Assistant Deacon (2014), Jang Jae-hyun takes Korean exorcism to feature length with The Priests (2015). Many of the elements remain the same, with a senior priest and his unprepared assistant attempting to exercise a young woman tied to a bed in true William Peter Blatty fashion - though the third act takes on a life of its own switching gears to a refreshingly action oriented finish. The upgrade sees the principles taken on by recognizable faces with Gang Dong-won as the novice, while Kim Yoon-seok is your senior clergyman.
Sadly the version of The Priests I was able to find had subtitles that were immersion breaking. While I can say that…
is it impressive? no
is it particularly original? of cours no
but there are park so-dam and, especially gang dong-won, soooo 👀
Kim Yoon-seok is a really great actor and carries an otherwise bland film.
I did enjoy the film but was a bit disappointed when I checked the runtime and saw that it was almost over just as the exorcism was beginning to ramp up in intensity. I would’ve preferred if they had cut out a bit of world-building in the first half or simply expanded the second half to make room for more of the actual horror.
There's a surprising charm to seeing so much Western horror iconography filtered through a Korean lens: full moons, crucifixes, and exorcisms. The novelty of it all, and the fact that Kim Yoon-seok is one of the most charismatic actors on the planet, ends up being enough to make up for the reality that "The Priests" has no big ideas on faith or evil in the modern world, despite a premise that begs for such rumination.
doesn't really offer anything special as an exorcism movie but it's the acting by kim yunseok, kang dongwon and especially park sodam that gives this its charm
