The boundaries are blurry but the majority of the film should be concerned with flashing images that last for perhaps a few frames or with pulsating images that are liable to create some sort of optical illusion or have a hallucinatory effect. Includes analog and digital works although film and senior works have something of an edge.

The order of the list is more or less determined by the purity of the films, beginning with the most basic and structuralist ones that only work with light and dark frames to films using more intricate or open-ended concepts and more complex patterns and images. The latter films also tend to diverge farthest from the original concept of the flicker film but they do, I think...I hope, maintain something of the original spirit. They may also be equals if not even superior in terms of either their structuralist interests or their visceral effect on the viewer, or ideally they have something to offer on both levels.
