Ghoul Gruel’s review published on Letterboxd:
Hella slow burn without the gore, jump scares, suspense, or ghoulies to punctuate it. Sure there’s ghosts, but what’s a ghost if it looks and behaves like a living person?
Mighta hit more if I was familiar with the original myth. Reading up on it, I like the idea of channeling it through this war-criminal plot but I prolly shoulda visited something closer to the source first. The political procedural backdrop takes up a lot of space and overshadows the genre horror for human horror. What’s left doesn’t commit enough to either to be truely powerful.
Hats off to Bustamante though coz it’s really well put together. It looks awesome. That ‘peaceful protest’ scene as the van made its way into the crowd and the banging increases coulda been outta The Dark Knight. There was a slow precision about a lot of it. I think the score, which wasn’t bad, could have been used more effectively to ratchet the tension and push it even further.
