Slappy McGee’s review published on Letterboxd:
I watched this without knowing it was a Hammer film. I kept thinking that this was a REALLY GOOD Vampire film - almost like a Hammer film! Duh! Turns out it WAS one. Then I read that this is considered a "low bar" in the Hammer library. Fuck that! This movie is VERY good!
That being said... there are LOTS of BOOBIES. Maybe that's why the big hoo-ha about not liking this film, as perhaps some thought it veered into another genre. But it DOESN'T! There are lots of boobs to be shown at this "No-Bras Finishing School" but all of the "sex" is very off-camera and extremely tasteful. So, what's the major malfunction here?
And - hey - ain't nothing wrong with more boobies than normal in a Hammer flick. This was the beginning of the 70's too. So... free love, baby.
All that being said, I looked up director Jimmy Sangster and turns out that he only directed 3 movies and was mostly a WRITER for Hammer. Which makes total sense.
He's not credited as a "writer" on this film, but we all know... IYKYK.
And he was the writer of several of the Hammer films that I really dig. So, NO WONDER I liked this movie so much!
Bam.
A great Vampire flick. Some nice twists and turns along the way. A very gothic feel to it. And, although it gets a little "Frankenstein-y" towards the end, I think this one is a HIDDEN GEM in the Hammer Collection.
Oh... and did I mention the boobs?
