Hooptober 12 | #20/34 (my list here)
This is one of those films that makes you smile and gives you a little bit of hope and then smashes that hope with a hammer, and it does that over and over again. The fact is, reality is like that sometimes. It's like that for a lot of people and it's like that for a lot of children. The film doesn't shy away from these realities, there's no sugar coating what's happening, and no one is safe.
The result is a powerful one. I actually think this would have worked better without the fantasy/horror angle or with less of it, but I understand the point of its inclusion since the movie is about children.
The director was a show runner for a season of True Detective I haven't seen yet and I'm itching to see more of her work now.
You should watch this, but don't expect to come out of it feeling good.
