Hooptober 12: 16/31

I can see the executive meeting for this project; let's get Tobe Hooper, he did some indie stuff that people liked! Unfortunately I feel like Hooper's sensibilities don't really mesh with Stephen King's; both are horror masters, but from completely different camps. The small-town drama that unfolds in King's novels while some spooky otherworldly shit throws a wrench in all of the humanity makes for a great book, but it needs a director who understands both of these extremes.

The film doesn't really know what to do with all these characters. In fact, it doesn't know what to do with the vampires either. We've got a dollar-store Nosferatu here who's neither menacing nor fun. It's better to let Mike Flanagan take on these kinds of Stephen King projects. Or: This could have been Twin Peaks with vampires, but then again, that's pretty much Midnight Mass.
