That sorta otherworldly headtrip phenomena filtered through gritty 80’s science and a similar grimy American backdrop. Was giving me Ghostbusters meets Exorcist 2 meets Poltergeist, even without any ghosts or demons. Throw in the Willy Wonka boat ride, a heavy dose of Cronenberg, and Ken Russell’s flair for style and religious fuckery, and you have this movie.
When it began I was so wrapped up in every single conversation and movement. It’s so fucking riveting and Hurt was magnetic. It sags a little in the middle but it bounces back hard.
“And I think we should get married.”
“You know, of course, I’m supposed to be at least a little bit nuts?”
“A little bit? You’re an unmitigated madman! You don’t have to tell me how weird you are. I know how weird you are! I’m the girl in your bed the past two months. Even sex is a mystical experience for you. You carry on like a flagellant, which can be very nice, but I sometimes wonder if it’s me that’s being made love to. I feel like I’m being harpooned by some raging monk in the act of receiving God.”
