Hooptober 12: 14/31

In this episode of "Are the English alright?": Ben Wheatley's Kill List, a film so full of twists and turns that I'm glad I kind of forgot why I put it on this year's Hooptober list. The erratic jumping between genres and the jittery, elliptic narrative make for a nail-biting watch.

It's an oppressive film from start to finish, feel-bad in every sense. Adding to that atmosphere is the fact that most plot points are so vague and shrouded, but that also leaves the film with precious little to say. Which is perhaps the point -- in a post-industrialist hellscape where being a killer for hire is just part of the gig economy, there are very few things left to believe in, and those things are better left undiscovered.
