This a directorial debut? Are you kidding me? Talk about subverting audience expectations. Andrea Arnold knocks it out the park again. However, I think this is even more incredible and has way more dynamics than Fish Tank.

Something I noticed very early on in the movie that continued up until the end of the movie, was the transition and fluidity between shots. Every time a new shot emerges there is some sort of movement, whether that be from the camera, a person walking, an object, or a person talking. There is always something happening to keep the audience engaged from scene to scene. If I'm not mistaken there's maybe 5-10 (wide) static shots in the movie, which, though few and far between, allow much needed breathing room from the intensity of the situation at hand in the movie.

I'm going to stop my review here because I think this movie works best having absolutely no prior knowledge of the context. My mind was racing throughout the duration of this film, side stepping my expectations at every turn.

Red Road is dreamlike nightmare of a movie, with tender, yet volatile performances which will render you speechless by the end. Honestly, somewhat of a tough movie to recommend, just in terms of some of the content but at the same time I cant help but admire the artistry that went into this project.
