Alyssa Jayne’s review published on Letterboxd:
"How sadly hath the Lord testified against you."
Took me ten years to finally get around to watching this, but it was worth the wait! Number 5 for Hooptober XII.
Words escape me in trying to describe this film. It is a slow-burning masterclass in dread; while much of the horror happens off-screen, the film is rife with anxiety and mistrust. The banished family is threatened not only by the harsh realities of survival and the evil forces waiting in the woods, but by their own fears and suspicions.
And, of course, it is meticulously steeped in its 17th century setting. The costuming, set design, and use of language all come together to create a beautifully immersive portrayal of Puritan New England.
I think I'll need to rewatch this to fully appreciate it, but I'll be more than happy to indulge. We all deserve to live deliciously sometimes.
