Ghoul Gruel’s review published on Letterboxd:
Travellers… The Further… Entities… Malevolent… Insidious…
So, fun fact and an unoriginal and wanky elitist take, I have a massive negative bias towards the WanCU (and by extension Patrick Wilson coz why the fuck is he in both these franchises?) I don’t have a good reason for it. I didn’t hate the first two Conjurings, something’s just grown in me and now I associate these with everything I dislike about glossy, mainstream popcorn horror. Overproduced, full of expected jump scares and ye olde ghosts and creepypasta ghouls, with cheap emotionally manipulative and melodramatic scripts. Equal parts tossery to spookery.
But you know what I hate the most about it? The gigantic fucking houses and the grey colour palette.
I kept having to check myself coz I found I was pulling a literal stink face (as apposed to the positive stankface) the whole time.
But I’m not so stubborn to pretend that some of the jump scares didn’t get me or that I didn’t get goosebumps. And because I’ve seen The Red Door there was a satisfaction joining the dots, although it’s kinda wild that the plot was so convoluted from the beginning of the franchise. For every part I didn’t mind, there were a tonne of things I did. Just really hard work and it kept getting worse. By the end all I could think was “Was that it?” and that Red Door was the exact same movie but everyone was older?
Big meh.
