Speechless. Not because it was great, just because it was so unexpected.
From the director of Audition and Ichi the Killer and 121 other movies. This is a man who knows he’s fucked in the head and is talented enough to make it work for him.
It takes less than two minutes to know you’re watching something special, unusual, and batshit insane, but I’d argue it teases more than it delivers. It never normalises, but it does create its own lane and runs it. This is the essence of those insane Japanese game shows. I don’t even know what you call this genre.
Anyway, it wasn’t horror, which is what I wanted and, while I respect the craft, I found it a bit repetitive, tame, and middling.
