HOOPTOBER 12
ENTRY 8: film from a Black director with a Black lead
It works perfectly as a UFO/extraterrestrial movie and immediately turns into a slog when the meta gets into the play. Not that it's not important (racial erasure, capitalistic exploitation of one's trauma, people's desire for spectacle - are all valid and curious topics for discussion), it's that thay feel somewhat ALIEN in this movie. Like here we go, watching at the UFO dripping blood, and here is our Meta-Commentary that the Show Will Always Eat You, oh, Dear Viewer (also fuck you very much for the "alien species called Viewers") - it just eats away the otherwise solid horror experience
But still, when it works, IT FUCKING WORKS
and omg is it beautifully shot
