HonestHermit’s review published on Letterboxd:
This was nothing like I expected. It honestly reminded me of when I was 10 – 13 (back in the 80s) and my school library for some reason had this very small selection of non-fiction books on histories and legends of werewolves, vampires, ghosts, and of course witches. They were my favourite books, I got them out over and over again! They were filled with all of this wonderful old artwork/illustration, much like what is shown in this film. For that reason alone, this film gave me a big hit of nostalgia.
But also, the very sincere comparison of the witches of yore to the “hysteria” of female psychiatric patients at the time the movie was made, and then, the current viewer seeing all that through an even more modern lens. It’s easy to see how it’s all just various forms of demonizing women. Kind of makes you wonder in another hundred years, what (to that future audience) will so obviously be our witch hunts and hysteria.
The film itself is actually a really fun watch with amazing and wild visuals. It’s darker and stranger than I expected, but also more humorous. Would definitely recommend!
