Hooptober XII: 22/32

This new direction that the V/H/S franchise has been rowing in since its streaming jump to Shudder has led to a newfound appreciation for the series. It’s become an annual and welcome chance to see new, exciting directorial entries into horror canon. This round we get some excellent shorts from Adult Swim stalwart Casper Kelly, and up and comers Ana Zlokovic & Micheline Pitt-Norman, while also letting some genre staples like Paco Plaza of [REC] fame expand and experiment with their storytelling prowess. V/H/S Halloween is a welcome addition to the series, focusing on the greatest Holiday in existence. And it all makes for an excellent Spooky Season watch.

A couple of fun shorts played against some incredibly disturbing bits lends V/H/S Halloween a lovely dynamic that vacillates between outright horror and hilarious horror comedy. Some absolutely insane visual effects are thrown around in nearly every short film. Theres a level of gore contained in a few segments that I would say comes the closest to Terrifier level practical effects that I’ve seen, leaving me happily slack-jawed and sickened in the process.

Realizing again that I’m a sucker for found footage, and a well curated anthology.
