Hooptober XII: 21/32

Breaking up the typical loads of splatter, camp and effects driven horror to indulge in one of the cutest, most wholesome teen-vampire “love” stories ever put to film, Ariane Louis-Seize’s Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person. Built upon an entrancingly elegant atmosphere, authentic chemistry between its leads, and a subtle teen angst, Louis-Seze’s arthouse dram-com hits all of the appropriately familiar vamp-camp beats, while adding a completely unique spin on a widely explored genre.

Throughout, Humanist Vampire does a phenomenal job of showing so much, letting its viewer interpret and understand its world without directly telling us much of anything. Sparse dialogue pairs with rich imagery, thoughtfully subtle wardrobing, and earnest character portrayals, creating a thematic warmth amidst a very cold, drab setting. Sara Montpetit as Sasha wields a simultaneous heartfelt vulnerability and doomy obstinacy that feels like an acting performance beyond what an artist in their early 20’s should be capable of. She really makes this whole thing tick, and it’s a welcome breath of fresh air in the horror space.

This might be as close as I ever get to watching Twilight…
