Slappy McGee’s review published on Letterboxd:
There's a specific sub-sub-sub-genre of horror that should be simply "Waxy Horror".
Yeah, tons of films set in wax museums... and we all know what's up.
This particular one follows all the tropes of a "Waxy Horror" and is certainly fun along the way. Seems a bit "gothic", a bit "sleuth-y", a bit "Edwardian", a bit "70's stylish ", and a bit "Jack-the-Ripper-London-y".
That's what they were going for. And they just threw it all into the cauldron and gave it stir with a large boat oar.
It helps that they stacked the cast with recognizable actors with great marquee value from yesteryear including Ray Milland, John Carradine and Broderick Crawford.
Not to mention the great Bride of Frankenstein herself!!! (Elsa Lanchester in one of her final films!)
The wax statues that haunt the guests and local town residents include Jack the Ripper, Bluebeard, Lizzie Bordon, and Attila the Hun... with a strong focus on the Ripper as perhaps the "killer"! Heh... but we will see. We will see.
The ending offers a nice twist I was not expecting. Nice when it tricks ya like that.
The most UNUSUAL factoid I found about this film was that it was produced by Bing Crosby. And that's the only "Producer" credit he has. He has 8 or so Executive Producer credits and well over 150 actor credits, of course, but this film is the only one I could find listing him as "Producer". Odd choice for the Bingster. I'm sure there's a story there... but I'm either too lazy or too "I-don't-care-enough-to-research-it" to follow through on that. But there ya go.
Maybe Bing just loved him some Waxy Horror.
