Hooptober 12: 6/31
The soft the supple step and sturdy pace,
that in the smallest of all circles turns,
moves like a dance of strength around a core
in which a mighty will is standing stunned.
The focus on inner turmoil by way of some "exotic" culture (whatever that meant in the 1940s in the US) reminded me of I Walked with a Zombie, and of course both movies had the same producer. In both films, I was delighted by the dialogue-heavy dread that the film builds up until it ends with some great scary scenes, but I can see why the slow pace would turn people off.
The shots of the panther were the most interesting to me; this prowling mass of power, caged in until it's let loose. It's like a Freudian sequel to the Rilke poem.
