Slappy McGee’s review published on Letterboxd:
Fun Fact I learned today:
"Jigoku" is the Japanese word for "Hell".
Whereas in English that is known as any Melanie Griffith acting performance.
(I kid the Griff only because we share the same day of birth. But, seriously though, there's something to be said for a nepo-baby that sleeps her way to the middle. Mama Tippi would be so proud.)
Okay... back to Japanese Hell.
Apparently they have bubbling pus and feces lakes along with delightful blood rivers, boiling saunas and saw massages. Sounds lovely.
After about an hour, we get to Hell and it... um... all breaks loose.
Some crazy late 50's and early 60's aesthetics. Quite spectacular for the day. Wild storytelling. Very bleak and somewhat nihilistic. But, when it comes right down to it, these souls that are there being tormented... well...
...Fuck 'em...
(ps... building those little balancing rock towers is indeed something that I would find in my own personal hell. #accurate...)
