Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is more of a character study than anything else. We get to understand Bruce Wayne/Batman as a character and don’t see him doing as much superhero detective work as we may see in Batman: The Animated Series.
Our full thoughts (with spoilers!) can be heard on Episode 42 of the podcast!
Episode 12.5 of the podcast is out now! In the first half of the show we’re doing an Oscars recap. We talk Conan, Anora, and which one of us won our Oscar predictions game.
Then we talk about The Monkey. Oz Perkins is a fascinating contemporary horror auteur. The Monkey is his dark comedy about growing up without parents (particularly without a father) and the inevitability and randomness of death.
While Ryan loved the film’s tone and themes, Shane was let down by the lack of tension in the storytelling. The deaths are creative and often hilariously over-the-top.
Ryan: 4.5/5
Shane: 2.5/5
Hitchcock’s Rear Window totally holds up as an all-time classic. The technicolor cinematography and set design are both brilliant and establish the film’s single location perfectly. Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, and Thelma Ritter all give fantastic performances. The film’s exploration if voyeurism is fascinating. Join us on Episode 17 of the show to hear us discuss this masterpiece in depth.
