“Ah ah ah, the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless. Peacocks and lilies for instance *snorting laughter*”

They strapped a bigass horn on a fat pony and called it a unicorn. A great choice. It’s begging for a snuggle. This is full of cool shots of animals and insects. But what the fuck kinda Australian marsupial is that? Like, that’s not a rat, yeah?

I don’t have the filmic vocab to describe all the things this movie does right that had me oohing and ahhing almost constantly. What it amounts to is that it’s just real fuckin beautiful. It’s the most romantic aesthetic and it’s dripping in dark 70’s surrealism, which makes it even more so.

Drops us into this dystopian near-future that feels like a 12 Monkeys or Children of Men, but way out on the outskirts of civilisation so we only see its edges. It’s a peripheral creeping danger that plays more as a backdrop like in Chronicles of Narnia, but it’s a good intro to the idea that’s things are a bit off base.

Despite LBs reference to Alice in Wonderland, we never get a hard tip into the fantasy world. Just a lot of weird whimsy and abstract shit bleeding into real life. Actually, I couldn’t tell you what was real or not. It’s a slow, patiently layered dream.

“She has a very vivid imagination. You know, she hears things. Grenades. Machine guns... She thinks there's a war going on. And that's not all, a little while ago she thought she saw a unicorn!“
