Dawn of the Dead

“They're after the place. They don't know why, they just remember... Remember that they want to be in here.”

A fun commentary on mindless consumerism (which I also abhor). Ironically, shopping malls are dead now for the most part. If this was filmed today where would it take place? My guess is a Costco or Amazon warehouse.

Our survivors are a likable group. You want them to persevere, but quickly come to terms with the inevitable. Ken Foree absolutely steals the show as Peter. I want to know more about his brothers.

Makeup and practical effects oscillate between looking outstanding or utterly underwhelming. The blue/grey used for the zombies was inconsistent — in some cases, it didn’t even extend all the way down their necks. I just found it incredibly difficult to ignore. Conversely, Tom Savini’s demise and everything at the end with Flyboy was fantastic.

I think the film’s reputation left my expectations too high, but I appreciate it for what it is. For now, Night of the Living Dead is my favorite. On to Day of the Dead next!
