🧟‍♂️ Hooptober 12 - 10/45 🧟‍♀️ “Decades: 1970s”

This movie is definitely very eerie and dreamy but I wasn't expecting it to also be so blunt in its depiction of Australian society's treatment of their Aboriginal citizens. I'm not Australian, nor have I ever visited, but the casual and overt racism towards the indigenous characters was not lost on me. I went into this expecting an ethereal end-of-the-world tale and that's exactly what The Last Wave is; it's also a not-so-subtle allegory for the consequences and losses that can come with colonialism and white supremacy.

I really enjoyed taking everything about The Last Wave in, from the soundtrack and all that unsettling weather to the wonderful performances of leads Robert Chamberlain and David Gulpilil. It didn’t exactly confound me as far as what was and wasn’t “real,” but it did pique an interest in learning more about the history of Australia’s Aboriginal communities and cultures, and any film that leaves me wanting to know more is always good as far as I’m concerned.
