Hey hey. I got a bit behind with the reviews. I’ve been a bit under the weather so although I’ve kept up the viewing, I haven't really felt like putting my views down. I’ll try and catch up this evening before I watch the final film of this year’s March Around the World (as I write it is 18:03 on the 31st of the month. It just a good job I kept up the pithy Twitter reviews so I can vaguely remember what I thought of each film…..
So to Face of the Devil… And in truth there isn’t much to say. It’s a low budget Peruvian horror movie that…
"Are you all right? I've been talking to you, but you don't listen to me. What's wrong?"
"I saw my mom."
Well, once again the poster has nothing at all to do with the movie. There are no tentacled beasts or any beasts, creatures or what-have-you, for that matter. There's just a young girl whose mother may or may not have been possessed at one point and now has gone on a trip with her boyfriend and their buddies. People start disappearing in computer generated clouds of murky water and the girl starts seeing mom. And it's possibly the only horror film that I've seen from Peru that's not Anaconda.
Sometimes a film comes onto my radar so I throw it into my watch list hoping for the right moment to watch it. It sometimes sits in my list so long that I complete forget where I heard about it from or why I put it there. Sometime I am rewarded with a true gem but sometimes it lands with a thud making me wonder why it caught my attention in the first place. FACE OF THE DEVIL falls squarely in the middle.
This Peruvian horror film was not a total bust but it certainly was very average. It is blessed with a beautiful locale and attractive, likeable actors, but is bludgeoned by shoddy visual effects and a muddy plot.…
As a fan of Italian exploitation fare, I expect more from a horror flick set in the South American jungle. But this film actually comes from Peru, so I suppose their local scenery isn't viewed as quite as ominous as it seems from Europe! So put aside any expectations of cannibals and animal violence, and lay your head down somewhere comfy for this extremely dull cabin-in-the-woods movie.
Six student friends go on holiday together, and one of them - in a scene of incredibly convenient foreshadowing - relates a spooky story about some sort of jungle spirit that can shapeshift and trick victims into thinking that it's someone they know, leaving them vulnerable to a quick killing. The only member…
despite beautiful natural images and scenarios I don't find any other charm, the characters are weak with their profiles, a profile plot that is totally different from what it ends up being, there is no suspense, slow development for the action and aspects without closure
In this Peruvian horror yarn from director Frank Perez-Garland(UN DIA SIN SEXO,LOCOS DE AMOR),a sixtet of twentysosmethings composed of three guys and three gals are on a vacation in the Peruvian jungles where an unseen supernatural presence, that is connected to a deceased possessed gal,is secretly lurking through the savannah as the sixtet slowly fall victim in one-by-one fashion. Perez-Garland and co-star/scriptwriter Vanessa Saba(THE VANISHED ELEPHANT,EL DORADO:CITY OF GOLD) try very hard at presenting a promising premise that looks very hopeful, only for it to fall apart in the last ten minute when possession and several gory murders occur(with deteriorated corpses, face smashings, and torn open chests) that lead to a heavily dark finale, all of which doesn't work despite some of the splatter at…
Don't be fooled by the creature on the poster. Think more The Smoke Monster from Lost. Very low budget, interesting location, weak cast.
La vi cuando era muy pequeño. Desde entonces, no eh podido sacarme el nombre “la cara del diablo” de la cabeza.
La peli no es mala, tampoco buena. Y sin mentirles si hubiera visto ahora por primera vez I wouldn’t like it. Pero los recuerdos y la nostalgia que me trae es inevitable, haciendo imposible que me disguste.
By the way la película tiene una buena intención (to scare people obviously) y a pesar que no lo hace, se nota el esfuerzo que le pusieron.
