Rollerball
★★½

Watched 24 Nov 2025

There's an early scene during the first rollerball bout (where everyone wears shirts that just say "ROLLERBALL" rather than supporting a specific team) of a woman in the stands, knitting and chatting. It's a very brief cut, but probably the most I've ever related to a character in a sports movie.

Anyway, this is really long and pretty boring. There's drama about the corruption of the business guys running the game that doesn't really work in a modern context (because of course capitalism is bad and the rich people in charge are going to exploit their athletes and put them in danger for the profit of it all) that I'm assuming had more of an impact on the original audience.

I did appreciate that they gave us such a thorough breakdown of the rules of this ridiculous made-up sport, though, because that was one aspect I never found confusing. The "why" to play is more of a question than the "how."
