Hooptober 12
Film #33 of 42 watched
Gorgeous use of German Expressionism and is amazing to see a pillar of gothic horror.
How lucky are we to be able to watch a 103 year old film. A film that was almost destroyed from existence.
The production company behind Nosferatu was sued for copyright infringement by the widow of Bram Stroker, the author of Dracula. The company did not try to negotiate for the rights and
therefore was an illegal adaptation. A German court ruled in her favor and ordered that all copies be destroyed, but this was after it had been distributed to the United States, where copyright laws were less strict. The novel also became public domain in the US due to a technicality... which paved the way for Universal Studios Dracula and all the adaptations we've seen since.
