Videodrome

day six of hooptober! baby’s first cronenberg film. went into videodrome not knowing anything (just knew a tv was involved in some way), and it was beyond anything i could’ve guessed or imagined. all roads lead back to videodROME:

from the get go, i really like the cinematography. i wrote ‘smudge says a lot,’ which i don’t remember what i meant anymore, but i’ll leave this in on the off-chance i remember or someone else will know what i was trying to say.

lmao the hidden dildo in the japanese porn flick got a laugh out of me. why does the head look weird though
commentary about how men run the porn industry and how intimacy has been exploited to become a business where they look for the most profitable avenues. and there’s a market for people with yellow fever, so it seems they’re into it

— well, i think we live in overstimulated times.
boy, you don’t even know the half of it, my man. ts was made in the 80s, if only they could see where we’re at now with social media and the hellscape that is the internet

wow, this guy is something else (derogatory) gotcha, so this film is basically about porn, torture, and torture porn

damn when she’s a freak...damn, i didn’t know this was gonna be kinky!

i like how he appeared in videodrome...very interesting concept, loving this so far.

him squeezing girl’s ass at work is peak sexual harassment, the 80s were truly a different time

his gf is definitely a woman written by a man…(derogatory), but also her putting out her cigarette on herself was so me unfortunately

i already knew they were gonna be snuff films. blurring the lines between real and make believe. i think there is a sort of horror realizing the porn you’re consuming is real though, especially when it’s rougher in nature.

— you’re a little older than i prefer.
wtf justice for older women, this guy stinks. ever heard of a milf or gilf?

he looks like a jerk off with those glasses LMFAO the fact that they addressed it in the movie has me in stitches

visual cortex (idr why i wrote this down!) maybe cos eyes are the window to the soul or something?

his stomussy is a metaphor for porn and its invasive nature into our psyches and bodies. only when it’s turned around and reflected in his male body does it become real to him. there is a horror to having a hole that everyone wants in on. definitely interesting social commentary going on in this film. it reminds me of billie eilish and her song “male fantasy” or maybe even her short film “not my responsibility” but that one’s more tangentially related

the practical fx is very fire in this i gotta say. stomussy included. i loooove the body horror

i can definitely see this inspiring guns akimbo and i saw the tv glow

wtf did that chapped lipped guy’s hand turn into?! i actually don’t know

(baroque music on synthesizer)
i love how this was a subtitle so much

hot take but this is what taxi driver wishes it was

overall, videodrome rocked my socks as my first cronenberg. it’s surrealist, kinky, and unhinged in all the ways i seek, and in the way that only an 80s retro vibe could deliver. it’s razor sharp (like the needle in the piercing scenes) in its commentary on media consumption, desensitization and dopamine addiction (always wanting more or harder), and how tech, porn, and lust worms its way into our bodies and brains. the practical fx are gloriously gnarly and memorable (long live the stomussy), the satire is biting, and the body and psychological horror works both literally and metaphorically. arguably one of my fave newfound horror films. long live the new flesh.
