Hooptober 12 | #2/34 (my list here)
WOW. The indigenous zombie horror movie of my mother fucking dreams. This is criminally underrated here on Letterboxd. I want more people to see this because this is 100% my new favorite zombie movie behind 28 Days Later.
We have fast zombies which always makes me happier than slow zombies. We have off the fucking wall, outstanding special effects, and gore for days. My jaw dropped multiple times. We have cinematography that goes hard as fuck, with absolutely gorgeous visuals that reminded me of season one of True Detective (a high compliment). There's even some stellar animated segments thrown in!
But then you have the entire plot revolving around indigenous folks (in this case, the Mi'kmaq) and their connection to their land and that skyrockets this into new wonderful territory for me. This movie does not hold back when it comes to showing how white people truly ruin everything. Without getting into spoiler territory, this movie is extremely unapologetic about showing how ungrateful, disrespectful, and harmful colonizers are to indigenous people.
I laughed, I cried, I screamed. Fucking incredible work. The world lost Jeff Barnaby too soon and I am so sad we won't see how far his talent would have gone.
