Hooptober 12: #6
[Criteria: 1 film by a Black director with Black lead]

As part of last year's Hooptober I watched Ganja & Hess and absolutely adored it. When I realised Spike Lee had a remake of the movie, I had to watch it asap and this year's Hooptober gave me a reason to finally get around to it. Having been more accustomed to Lee's late career style and being more receptive of all the idosyncracies that comes with it, I quite enjoyed this modern remake even if I thought it fell short by a fair margin. The comic moments were hit or miss but the gore was magnificently done. The other things that didn't quite work for me was how unsexy everything felt even while being more explicit than the original, everything felt a little too sanitized for some reason. I did enjoy the whole thing despite these because the original is a masterpiece and Lee does a great job of remodeling the story while still holding onto things that worked before. Could've been much better but not as bad as it is made out to be.
