happy first day of baby’s first hooptober! starting off strong with dawn of the dead. this was a pretty entertaining watch although my adhd went in full force after a while cos it was an at-home watch.
dario argento’s on here?? hell yeah let’s go, i loved suspiria
quickly overstimulating intro. wtf is with the racism in romero’s movies lol. these dudes incompetent asf i would not want them rescuing me. why did that guy shoot himself. damn there’s so many cuts in this, maybe i’ve just been watching hella meditative films though
— something happens to him, and we’ll be stuck
let me guess…something happens to him (post-watch maddie: yur)
that guy looks like white bad bunny lmfao
the “cos i’m a man” needledrop was crazy
fran not doing shit and the guy miraculously falling down on his goofy ahh
lmfao the zombie unintentionally killing itself by stepping into the helicopter. zombie kids zombie kids! hell yeah kill those zombie ahh kids
lmao the guy pushing him aside like here’s how it’s done HAHAHA he did it again as i was writing this. what a rookie
cinematography for the roof and mall was sick. love the shot composition, very visually intriguing
why did this remind me of paul blart mall cop lmfaooo i would not be surprised if it was inspired by this
fran is pregnant?? ok yes teach fran how to fly the helicopter. aborsh mentions
they really shouldn’t have left cos now they’re worse off. love the grocery montage though, also i’m surprised there’s still electricity, not sure if that was already addressed
i love montages where they just do whatever tf they want and go hog wild. laws are made up and not enforced in zombie land
hell yeah get creampied fuckers! pause
really love how this takes place in a shopping mall and how they’re all like “yes they come here because it is familiar” like malls are the safe haven even post-mortem. but eventually, the hype train comes to a screeching halt cos the novelty of free stuff wears off. cash is meaningless in an apocalyptic society but they take it anyway just in case. things aren’t as desirable when you can get whatever you want for free.
i enjoy the zombies of romero’s universe, and my review for day of the dead tomorrow locks that in fr with bub iykyk
overall, dawn of the dead was a solid kickoff for hooptober—messy, chaotic, and surprisingly funny in ways i wasn’t expecting. i liked the mall-as-metaphor, the consumer critique baked into the setting, and of course the grocery and shopping montage was peak cinema. the practical fx and shot composition carried hard, and my adhd was sometimes like “girl, log off,” but i persevered. still, romero’s vision is iconic for a reason—you can feel the fingerprints of this film all over modern zombie media. not my fave romero (so far), but a classic worth surrounding menacingly and picking its insides apart
