Zombie movies 3/5
Full list here.
The Night Eats the World feels both generic and unique at the same time, borrowing elements of various other similar films I love. The main character mentions at one point that "Dead is the new normal" and that he's the weird one, something I think might be a direct homage to I Am Legend.
Its less about the action and horror that typically accompanies the zombie genre and more of a character drama about a protagonist trying to keep himself sane as he attempts to survive alone in a building surrounded by the undead. I think the movie achieves what it sets out to do and the acting really worked for me, I really did care for Sam and it worked to raise the tension when he was in direct danger.
If there's one element that I think works really well here it's the sound design. Where other zombie movies feature loud, moaning, groaning or even screaming and roaring zombies, the zombies here are almost completely silent. It gives them this really eerie quality I think isn't present in other films from the genre. It makes them seem more like tragic victims rather than monsters like other zombie films, which is hammered home by some of the other plot point I won't spoil.
Overall, I think The Night Eats the World is a fantastic addition to the genre, but it's slow pace might not be for everyone.
Side note: I imagine you'd have to be pretty damn tired to sleep through a zombie apocalypse.
