“This is perfect. Eat him up.”

Having seen Burning Moon, I was fuckin excited for the extreme splatter I knew was coming but also weary of how it might be paced. And rightfully so on both accounts.

Germany’s response to Brain Dead/Dead Alive. Packed to the brim with the goopiest, sloppiest, bloodiest practical splatter I’ve seen in a while. Spectacular. From a shovel edge to the face to whole body’s sliding off of their skeletons. Come for the gore and stay for the gore.

Shoutout to the unintentional cenobite he created. Better than CD head that’s for sure.

Storywise, it’s put together in the clunkiest way so that it feels like a collection of small vignettes instead of a cohesive plot. It jumps about between time and characters without much cohesion and the connection feeling more inferred than anything else. I didn’t know who our main character was and I didn’t care about anyone. The result is a mind bogglingly bloated and convoluted story, but still curiously entertaining more often than not.

At almost 2 hours (wtf), the biggest problem, accentuated by the messy structure and editing, is that it feels repetitive. Even the gore. I’d trade a dozen of the decaps, head explosions, or shootouts to lose 30min and make this thing tight. We didn’t need all the throwbacks to the past or the extra characters or even any of the humanising story, coz it went nowhere. It did give some real dry comedic beats though, and I loved that.

But did I mention the gore?

“Oh scheiße, die hose!”
“Neeeiiiiin!”
