28 Years Later
★★★★

Watched 19 Jun 2025

Couldn’t resist jumping on an opening night viewing of the single most anticipated release on my list for 2025. 28 Years Later brings back Alex Garland and Danny Boyle in the writer & director seats for what is the true spiritual successor to 28 Days Later. It’s rather staggering reflecting on the career heights reached in the 20+ years since their first little zombie film shook up the industry, and there’s an assuredness to its world and character building as a result. I’m also still just trying to wrap my head around the fact this was shot largely on iPhone 15’s, because damn, there are massive, inspired shots littered throughout.

28 Years Later builds on those original, grounded sensibilities, while ratcheting up the action, pace and tension through more modern devices. The speed of the infected is still so adrenaline pumping, and having “classes” of them provide a layered backdrop to its mainland ventures. There’s a thematic smorgasbord offered up by Boyle and Garland, and I’m eager to see if my rating will move north, south or remain neutral upon rewatch. It’s certainly a film that has been permeating my headspace even after a night of sleep. Can’t wait to see everyone’s reviews coming in and to have some fun discussion!

Give me more big budget post-apocalyptic horror. Fk I love movies.
