Regionally set rom-coms, I will always love you.

One of the most important things storytellers can do is set a story in a place, to tell genre stories with streets and cities and shop and bars and people. To decentre all of that from America and London. To say that people can fall in love on the streets you walk.

This is a deeply flawed film.It has a shameful treatment of protestors and it trivialises serious issues.

Halfway through this film I had the startling realisation that I have rarely - if ever - seen a canonically non-binary character on film written this well.

It is wonderful to see a non-binary person be written as funny and complex and as a romantic interest. It is also tremendous to see a depiction of a non-binary person whose experience of gender actively shapes how they interact with the world.
