Gothic comfort food for the chilly autumn night soul. You know the drill; a large isolated mansion, family secrets, creepy portraits, sinister local weirdos, rape, disembodied ghost hands, Peter Cushing turning up half way through and a title that proves true when it starts about five minutes in and continues throughout. Directed by Roy Ward Baker, this is solidly atmospheric. Also, it manages to be a little creepy because, no matter how old-school the effects, no-eyes in a face is never something I want to see.

I've never seen that much love for this one but I've always adored it. One of my favourite haunted house films. As much as I love Amicus' modern day horrors I do wish they'd done a few more period ones like this. The score is beautiful, the cast is fantastic as is and then just to top it all off Peter Cushing arrives midway through. The house is the stuff of dreams in all its gothic glory. Stephanie Beacham is marvelous, her final shot in this is incredible. It's creepy, atmospheric and the backstory is heartbreaking. But it's hard to have too much sympathy for Silas as his revenge sucks! Best scene in the graveyard with Charles bashing his relatives bones up, ha!

a little slow at times, but extremely atmosphere throughout. the cinematography is stunning and the sets are outstanding. unfortunately, i did almost fall asleep multiple times due to boredom. despite that, i still think this is worth checking out, even if you don't finish it.

There are a few things Amicus got right with this gothic horror tale with Peter Cushing in a wig. First of all, the title And Now the Screaming Starts! is incredible and there were a couple great screeches to exemplify it. Second, love a good severed, bloody hand doing its very own thing and lastly, most important of all, I saw something I have never seen a person do in a horror film and I have seen...a few...in my day. As someone who struggles with extreme emotional highs and lows, when I saw a pissed off man pull a nearly skeletonized corpse from its tomb only to grab it by its ankles and start whacking the shit out of the skeleton against its own grave...HOLY SHIT that looked cathartic.

Schöner britischer Gothic-Horror aus der Amicus-Schmiede, inklusive Nebel, viel Regen und einer recht grausamen Story. 
Dass auch die Effekte, inklusive eiskaltem Händchen, erstaunlich krude geworden sind passt perfekt zum schaurigen Familienfluch. 
Herbert Lom, präsent in den Rückblenden, darf überzeugend brutal sein, während Peter Cushing eher durch seine Frisur als durch sein, stark storybedingt, Schauspiel auffällt. 
Roy Ward Baker liefert wiedermal gekonnt die gothische Schauermär ab, die vorallem mit einer dichten Atmosphäre, tollen Sets, einigen Grausamkeiten und mit einer tollen Garde an Mimen dem Hammer-Fan die gewünscht schaurig schöne Gruselkost liefert.

I watched this believing it was going to be boring but it proved me wrong. It saved making the clues that don't make sense understandable until the end when it reached its most fervent pitch. And a gothic vibe of horse carriages at dusk and creepy family portraits and awesome wall paper welcomes you from the start. It's got the same kind of curse plot that Black Sunday had, which is vengeance on a past injustice never really goes away, but it's only fed to us in bits and pieces until it goes into a flashback of its nasty origins. Peter Cushing arrives midway through as a pioneer in the science of the mind which he carries off in classic fashion, but the significance of his role as someone you believe could figure this out logically, is really why it stands out so well because gothic horror films tend to beat down science and logic.

"And Now the Screaming Starts!" isn't too intense: an old family curse, a castle, a ghost, and a creepy, autonomous hand killing people. With Peter Cushing, always a joy to watch, there's a nice Gothic vibe, and a few good scenes that make the 91 minutes more or less enjoyable.
