varda stoops over the detritus of the long 20th century and finds food scraps, neighbors cooking for neighbors, and supermarkets soaking their refuse in bleach to protect capital. and also: film editing as gleaning, finding your subject amidst the circulation of commodity-images, caring for humanity in spite of (because of) how messy we are, letting everyone tell their story. i think this is one of my favorite movies about communism

first short is very recommended- it’s almost giving solaris in its blend of deep space and memory exploration - the other two are totally skippable. cool visuals in the last one but it doesn’t go anywhere, and the second is literally about deadly body odor

lovely score and magical realist flourishes. get yourself a man who will build a cottage for yall to boink in. reminiscent of a line from Old Filth that i was reading about the same time:

“Time marches on.”

this feels like an intervention for people who are still stuck on organic produce being the answer to conventional extractivist agriculture; helpful if you’re feeling hopeless about the climate crisis, etc etc. it also completely erases indigenous american approaches to land management, presenting the new agricultural solution that somehow nobody has realized before. instead, the movie gives us a sea of celebrities parading into africa to show the rural folk how it’s done, celebrating an ahistorical return to the supposed…
