Welcome to the first Showdown of 2026! After a much-needed vacation, we’re back just as Send Help crashes into theatres. To celebrate the long-awaited return of the splatter-horror-comedy king, Sam Raimi, this week’s Showdown is livin’ on island time. Come up with a list of your ten favourite films set on an island, be it tropical, oceanic, Pacific, Mediterranean, Nordic, remote, bustling, cult-infested or even Bergman. Your picks can be any genre, as long as the majority of the action takes place on what Oxford English Dictionary defines as “an area of land, smaller than a continent, which is surrounded by water”. We’ll go one step further and add that it must be smaller than a country (with apologies to our home base of New Zealand).
