Non-2019 First Time Watches Ranked
Directors Ranked: Ridley Scott

Film #6 of my Birth Year Challenge

I watched Willow and this back-to-back and I have to say I preferred Willow, which is weird as this is definitely darker, which is usually my preference when it comes to fantasy. But that's not to say that this isn't a solid film.

There is a lot to like here for fantasy fans; the set and costume design as well as the cinematography help draw you into this cool, fantastical world. The great performances from a unibrow-donning Tom Cruise, and Tim Curry helped with the enjoyment as a whole.

It's hard to believe that this is a Ridley Scott film but when you think about it, it kinda makes sense. Three years prior, Scott released Blade Runner, a film that many consider to have arguably the best world-building in a film. And while Alien hadn't quite reached that side of things by this point, it certainly has today, even if not all of us enjoyed Prometheus.

This is another film that I believe suffers because I didn't watch it earlier on in my life. While it looks very cool, it is still definitely dated and I don't have that nostalgia to fall back on when something looks dated. In saying that, this is still an enjoyable fantasy tale.
