Amateurish and slow is how I would describe the first half of Are You There? - and be warned that is as good as the movie gets. The direction the story ultimately takes is so, so bad. I usually can find some measure of grace for smaller horror movies, but this was $6 well and truly wasted.
Please don’t be fooled by the vaguely Talk to Me sounding title.
Поначалу мне казалось, что режиссер Ким Нунан для своего дебюта выбрал удачное направление. Снять простой мистический хоррор на тему потери с латиноамериканским колоритом. Да и просто заменить опостылевшую доску Уиджи на иной предмет для общения с мертвыми уже вызывает у меня бешеный восторг. Однако он быстро решил показать, что умеет в элевейтед не хуже, чем какой-нибудь там Ари Астер и начать добавлять элементы психологического триллера. Правда мысль там самая очевиднейшая, из всех возможных, главная героиня из обычной девушки вдруг превратилась в омерзительную психопатку, а все немногочисленные душевные наработки успешно слиты в унитаз. Думаю, дальше не стоит объяснять, почему этот фильм заслужил свои низкие оценки и его стоит игнорировать. Да и у меня больше нет желания о нем говорить.

пока на сорок какой-то минуте не случается «ну хотя бы что-то», можно наблюдать непоколебимую уверенность режиссёра в том, что если всё «правильно» снять, смонтировать и озвучить, напряжение возникнет само по себе. но оно и близко не возникает, почему же, почему. в конце детали встанут «на места», как будто их изначальные места кого-то так уж не устраивали, а окончательные что-то поправили.
при том, что треть фильма - переведённое субтитрами общение комментаторов на стриме, верхом идиотизма звучат дублированные на русский две испанские фразы

Got to hang out with my friends and watch myself in the movie at one of our local theaters. What a great time
Are You There? has a winning first two acts that deliver on character, atmosphere, and themes. The horror elements are quite effective as well even on such a small budget. But the home stretch get more and more ridiculous and even ventures into some questionable twist territory.

I think people who dislike this movie more dislike the fact that the trailer & poster don’t match the movie than dislike the actual movie. The director did something unusual here and unfortunately got punished for it instead of rewarded, and that’s really a shame.
I liked this movie considerably better than most people did—the gradual unpeeling of the onion layers appealed to me. A solid script, well-directed and well-acted, raising questions in the viewer’s mind about little inconsistencies or logic gaps that turn out to… not be gaps after all.
Very unusual. If you’re looking for a typical haunting movie, or a popcorn flick, this ain’t it. There’s a third-act twist; more than that, I dare not say.
