It's 2026! The planet is in crisis. Fascists keep taking more and more power. Lots of people work way too much for way too little. Life is hard, so why not give yourself credit for watching movies?
This is like those participation trophies - you get to do a victory lap even if you only log one fucking movie. (SEE RULE 1)
RULE #1. DON'T STRESS OUT ABOUT THIS ... not even a little
Here are 24 pretty easy prompts (with 2 bonus prompts). That's about 2 movies per month. They're tailored for your watchlist, because ... you already want to watch those movies. See? EASY! (SEE RULE 1) EVERYTHING IS FINE. At least for a little while when you're watching some movies.
PROMPTS -
1. added to your watchlist in 2025 and didn't have a chance to watch it before now (if you joined in 2026, pick one of the first movies you added to your watchlist)
2. you read a funny review for this movie ... feel free to link it in your review
3. shuffle your watchlist (and if you don't like what you get, shuffle again)
4. something you want to rewatch (you can feel that way before or after watching it)
5. shorter than 260 minutes (just checking - you haven't been breaking rule 1, have you?)
6. released in 2026
7. something about this movie reminds you of something you like about yourself
8. you'd like to discuss it with someone (online or in person) ... we invite you to start that process with your tagged review
9. free associate ... use randomwordgenerator.com to come up with a word and choose the movie in your watchlist that resonates with you for that word (feel free to do this as many times as you want)
10. low stakes (you won't be particularly upset no matter how the story unfolds)
11. your favourite number .... open up your watchlist, and count the movies in the order they appear, and select the movie that corresponds with your favourite number
12. has a poster you really love
13. a type of film you'd like to explore (could be a mood or a style or a theme or a wide genre or something very niche ... please note in your list how you defined your type)
14. about an escape or a vacation (feel free to interpret this very loosely)
15. a film you feel like watching right now (this prompt should serve as a reminder of rule #1)
16. shuffle your watchlist (and if you don't like what you get, shuffle again)
17. it takes a village .... choose a movie on the basis of a member of the team (costume designer, writer, editor, score composer ...) who is not an actor and please name them in your review
18. someone you follow on Letterboxd gave it a good review
19. your favourite genre / subgenre (we invite you to specify what that is in your review)
20. features music you want to listen to
21. based on a book
22. shuffle your watchlist (and if you don't like what you get, shuffle again)
23. your comfort movie (a rewatch of a movie that reliably feels familiar in a soothing way OR something you predict will be emotionally easy for you)
24. the last movie you added to your watchlist (feel free to add it right now!)
**BONUS CHALLENGES - IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT**
**BONUS CHALLENGE 1: GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE**
Pick a film you really love (rated 5 out of 5). Find a Letterboxd member who has this movie in their four favourites and watch another one of their four favorites. Have fun playing around with this. If it starts to feel like you're breaking rule 1, then just pick a film in your watchlist that you think SHOULD be in other people's four favorites ...
techie directions: click on the movie on your profile, get to that movie's page, then click the green eye icon that has a number after it, and then click the word fans ... clicking on any of those people in the list will let you see their four favorites
**BONUS CHALLENGE 2: A DAY TO REMEMBER**
Pick a month and year that is special to you (for whatever reason). You do not need to tell a single soul why you picked this time. Then choose a movie that was released during that month/year. It doesn't matter whether it was released on DVD, or premiered in a film festival - embrace the easy! Just go with what works.
techie directions: click on the movie to get to its page, then click the word releases to the right of the word genre, and you will see a list of any well-known film festivals it has played at ... such as The Toronto International Film Festival or Cannes)
RULES -
1. DON'T STRESS OUT ABOUT THIS ... not even a little
2. change your list whenever you want, as many times as you want
3. You have one year (Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2026) to log as many films as you want
4. link your list in the comments of this/my list, and tag it with "easy26"
5. write a review (one word is enough) for each movie that you watch for this challenge
6. tag each of those reviews with "easy26"
7. if you don't feel like watching the movie that fits the prompt, go ahead and pick your second choice or rearrange your watchlist (SEE RULE 1)
8. you may add or delete any movies on your watchlist whenever you want ...and YOU MAY CHANGE THIS LIST accordingly ... as many times as you want
9. you may watch these in any order
10. you may count as many rewatches as you want
11. feel a ridiculous amount of satisfaction and pride, because you like watching movies, and that's good enough for us
*It's okay to be an overachiever and do more than one lap, but please don't brag about it so much that other people are tempted to break rule 1.*
DISCLAIMER: Rules 4, 5, and 6 are just the way Letterboxd challenges work. We've tried to make this challenge as light as possible within those confines, but any Letterboxd challenge is going to be kind of complicated. Please feel free to say, "Fuck this!" at any point. (And do the victory lap anyway - I mean who will know?)
TECHIE DIRECTIONS IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST LETTERBOXD CHALLENGE
1. Keep your tab with this challenge open (try not to close it for a while). If you need to find it again later, you can find my original challenge by searching for my username (MotherHen) and find it in my lists
2. Open another tab for Letterboxd (sign in)
3. If you don't already have at least 25 movies in your watchlist, you might choose have a little fun just adding more movies to it. It could make the rest easier.
4. In your tab, hover over your username at the top of your screen and select lists
5. In your tab, select "start a new list" on the right
6. Title the list "[Your Username]'s Take It Easy 2026"
7. In THIS tab (my original list), copy all of my prompts from the description and then paste them into the description in your list in the other tab.
8. Type "easy26" into the Tags Bar.
9. Save your list. Basically, save your list every couple seconds, because Letterboxd tends to crash
10. When you want to (feel free to wait - SEE RULE 1) ... Edit your list. Use the Green "Add a Film" spot to search for films that you would like to use for any of the prompts.
11. While you're in the Edit mode for your list, click to "show notes", and "edit entry" for any film by typing the number of the prompt and the copied text for the prompt. That way, you'll remember which prompt you thought the movie would work for.
12. If you like things organized, when you're in Edit mode, you can drag those movies to keep them in the order of the prompts, but you do NOT have to watch them in that order.
When YOU feel like you have a good amount of movies in your list to be ready to start the challenge, make sure you have both the tab with my original list and the tab with your list open. If you feel ready when all you have is one movie added for the fifth prompt (you feel like watching it now), good on you! If you would like to wait until you have added a possible movie for every prompt, sure thing. SEE RULE 1: We are not the boss of you.
13. From your tab, go ahead and hover over the "share" spot on the right of your list, and copy the link for your list. Go back to the tab with my original list. Paste the link to your list below as a comment in my list.
14. You can edit your own list whenever you want ... add more films and write their prompt number as notes for the entry ... delete them ... move them around ... whatever.
15. Log any of the films you watch for this challenge the same way you usually would, but just make sure you review each one and tag the review with easy26
