What a weird little film. It's a violent, repetitious, grim, and dour slice of dark fantasy made by people who very clearly think those words all go really well together.
It doesn't quite qualify for the Groundhog Day subgenre, but it's close enough that one misses the humor those movies need to succeed. I more admired the effort that went into this than I really enjoyed myself, which is a shame.
I hope everyone involved in production design gets to keep working, because this looks fantastic. Especially for the limited budgets, these costumes and monsters look terrific. I also applaud the creative team for making a truly original film, warts and all.
Between this and Ash it has been quite the year for clearly inspired by video games non-video game movies. Won't be the last time, I assure you.
Well... this was different. A deadly serious Prime Video fantasy in the Sword & Sorcery vein with a decent amount of spouting gory horror and decapitations. It's a deeply dour and serious take on a film that could have been a cheesy Conan knock-off if it were made in the 80s.
It's about a pair of armored knights who set out on a quest to stop a prophecy about a witch. They wind up in a dark hell dimension and must fight three bosses to achieved a magic sword / prevent the end of days.
This film is dead serious about its massive Dungeons and Dragons-like fantasy quest. Though I'd also say it's inspired by video games like Hellblade and Dark…

First off, I went into this blindly and was pleasantly surprised.
In the opening scene were introduced to a young Avalon and her mother being burned at the stake because of red haired women deems to be the prophecy of the Chosen One. Next were introduced to Boodie ( Jeremy Ninaber) and his brother William ( Matthew Ninaber) as they are fighting off demons and knights. Then Boodie decides to take the dive into the demons water and be taken to the under realm.
Now this has…
Back on my Dark Fantasy Bullshit with this grimdark bit of bloody swords n sorcery.
From the director of the pretty okay Death Valley (the one with the soldiers and monster guy in the underground bunker or whatever).
Played completely straight without a wink or a quip, following a knight following a prophecy into hell to find the chosen one and collect the magic video game stones from the level bosses.
It could have used some more self-awareness. Not to say I was clamoring for jokey-jokes, farts, or pratfalls; it is kind of refreshing in a way to just have an earnest, serious, nerd-ass knights n witches n demons dealio. But it's super straight-faced through the bloodshed and the magic…
Writer watched Edge of Tomorrow after playing Elden Ring for a week straight before starting this script. It's a little long, and I think it could have used a bit of escalation between getting the ability to respawn and fighting each boss.
The costumes and creature design are top notch. This is solid.
Knights, and demons, and witches, and sorcery!!! Love me a dark fantasy medieval horror with some folk horror elements. If you love Game Of Thrones, The Witcher, Evil Dead, and The Witch, I'm almost certain you'll have a decently fun time with this as well. It also kinda of plays out like your playing an RPG like Dungeons & Dragons, or a video game. Can't say it's necessarily anything new to the genre, but give it a chance. Not everything has to be groundbreaking.
**listening to an interview with the director on Mostly Horror podcast. Matthew Ninaber (who also plays Psycho Goreman in Psycho Goreman), said that his two biggest introductions to the horror and fantasy genres were Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Willow from 1988, and that makes so much sense with the way that A Knight's War's vibe ended up playing out.
surprisingly relatable as I too have been put thru hell for the sake of an emotionally withdrawn ginger
A Knight’s War is a boring and confusing fantasy horror film. I really wanted to like this movie more than I did. Despite being incredibly disappointed, there were some things that I did like about it. I really liked the production design and the cinematography. The different settings in this film looked really good but they weren’t utilized well. The cinematography is also surprisingly pretty good. This movie is visually appealing which I do appreciate.
My issues with this movie are the mediocre acting and confusing storyline. The acting in this movie is so bad. It feels really stiff and unnatural. It doesn’t help that the characters are really uninteresting. The story and plot were extremely convoluted. They tried to…
Pretty moody and dark sword and sorcery flick that refuses to not take itself and it's plot seriously, which I appreciated a lot.
Bhodie winds up in hell, sent there to find a girl and fulfill a prophecy. There they must defeat 3 demons to take their stones to return to the real world.
This was weirdly introspective when not killing the main characters over and over. It was giving me Dark Souls vibes (although, I did give up on that game as dying a million times isn't my idea of a good time lol) and was really dedicated to sticking to it's quest.
Looked so dark and gritty and it was a pretty good time. The ending was nice.
