Another year, another glorious Hooptober attempt. Starting last year, I decided to get less serious about completing the challenge. If I do, great. If it's looking like I'm not going to be able to, no need to shove my schedule around to fit stuff in at the expense of other movies I want to watch. The appreciation of horror cinema is what's most important.
And yet even with that caveat, man was I still so excited to put this list together.
Couldn't wait for Cinemonster to drop the rules and this year I finally decided a few weeks ago to start keeping a list of potential Halloween season films so I wasn't sitting there in the middle of October thinking, "damn what was that movie I said a couple months ago I wanted to watch now?" Several of the whomping 142 films I put on that brainstorm list made this one, and many more made it that weren't even top of mind until I went over the rules.
There's usually a couple trends I notice. One was a conscious choice by me to watch more werewolf films, as they've randomly been on my mind recently when I've been a vampire guy most of my life (though there’s multiple of those here as well). Another I noticed afterwards is the inclusion of several airy and atmospheric horrors, thus the list's subtitle. I'm also going to be reading some spooky books. I hope to be finishing Stephen King's The Stand soon (certainly before I watch the miniseries movie) and am aiming to check out the great Michael Wehunt's short story collection The Inconsolables (been sitting on my bookshelf unread for far too long) and his debut novel that will be releasing in October, the fittingly named The October Film Haunt (an expansion of his excellent short story). And I'm also going to be flipping through my Junji Ito Tomie collection.
It's gonna be a great season of horror and the chills from it are already helping me handle this hot LA late summer. Looking forward to diving into the genre and reading everyone else's spooky journeys as well. Full list of rules can be found here. What titles meet which requirements are in the notes. I was able to satisfy all rules with 25 titles (I don't count the extra credit titles towards others rules), so 6 are free spots. List is subject to change (while still meeting all the requirements).
