It seems that the winning combination for me is a 90s or 2000s period drama plus some dreamy actor yk … there’s not enough appreciation of Matt in these other reviews <\3
Billie Piper is back as Sally Lockhart in The Shadow In The North, along with Hayley Atwell and David Harewood. This time they're out to thwart the machinations of evil industrialist Axel Bellmann, who is working to perfect a steam-powered, railway-based superweapon.
This is another fun Sally Lockhart mystery. David Harewood plays a dual role. Billie Piper is as fantastic as ever. The evil industrialist is portrayed by Jared Harris, who was Andy Warhol in the brilliant Lili Taylor vehicle I Shot Andy Warhol.
The Shadow In The North does not pick up some of the loose threads left dangling at the end of The Ruby In The Smoke, but if you didn't watch them back to back you might…
I feel like there is a movie missing in between this and the first? All of a sudden they’re detectives, ALSO what about the little girl? Didn’t even mention her!
More entertaining than the first, but still better belongs as the random book I found in the library with Rose Tyler's face on it.

first they kill the dog then the hottest person in the movie 😭 right sure ok
this is deeply offensive to me in so many ways, lol.
but like, Billie Piper and Matt Smith, so the 15 year old in me was happy as a clam

Less of a mess but they killed the dog and the hot guy??? Bro.
More than the shadow of a bit of a mess - this actually gets worse each time I see it.
Only really worth seeing for a pre Doctor Who Matt Smith who is superb in this . I feel the same when I watch it's predecessor The Ruby In the Smoke about Julie Walters as Mrs Holland - she is absolutely amazing and only worth viewing this for her brilliant evilness. But Billie Piper is frankly dull in this role ..........so many other actresses could have done this so much better...
“There’s no need for a fire. The smoke is quite sufficient.”
Like this wasn’t very good at all but it was slightly better than The Ruby in The Smoke and I would watch an hour of paint drying if JJ Feild would walk by the camera once (1) in a billowy shirtsleeve
