With his new action-thriller Cloud now looming in select cinemas, we’re using the latest release from horror master Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Pulse) to head to Horrorville and celebrate Japan’s essential contributions to the gory genre. While there is a distinction between Japanese horror and “J-horror”—the latter specifically applies to the new wave of movies made after 1998’s Ringu—both are absolutely eligible for this Showdown (though the 2002 American remake The Ring is not). So, round up your friends Ichii, Tetsuo and Godzilla (!) to help you create a list of your ten favourite kaidan hailing from Japan.
