I can totally see why this movie doesn’t work for some, but I had so much fun here. And I think that’s what Kahn was trying to accomplish here. I think it was really awesome how it weaves the tones of two entirely different movies. I think this will definitely gain a cult following and I’ll be right here waiting.
TIFF #9
*World Premiere*
Midnight Madness #3
I - actually we, since the midnight madness crowd has a hive mind* - had a bunch of throwback fun with this one.
This is a great intergenerational genre film and a perfect starter family bonding horror flick for those who were teens or college age in the time of AMERICAN PIE's release (yeah that's a pun) and who now have teens or preteens of their own to show this to...
Also, Brandon Routh, you gotta cum for him. (*come! Sorry, I wanted to keep this review PG-13 but now I have American Pie on the mind)
*or not, since there are quite a few bad reviews... but I heard a lot of laughter around me, specifically.
ICK is maximalist off the rails kinetic filmmaking for kids and their Gen Y parents to gorge themselves on. The people that made this must be mad…in a good way. Fully committing to the aesthetic and not compromising on the vision of what this is intended to be. Bombastic needle drops of songs I never wanted to hear again ironically blasting your lobes without mercy. Dialogue is funny and clever designed to give you, a wait, what did he just say reaction. Brandon Routh’s performance centers the whole movie and leaves you wondering why isn’t he leading more movies. I dig ICK.
I’m a big Joseph Kahn fan from the music video days (his video for Korn’s “ADIDAS” is still an all-timer for me) and his segue into feature films has always been greeted with open arms by these eyeballs.
And if you told me Kahn was doing his version of “Small Town Teen Genre” a la THE BLOB or THE FACULTY, this would have been exactly what conjured in my head (and then some).
Kahn’s “pfft…whatever” sensibilities and sense of humor he’s been cultivating since DETENTION is in full form here, down to the passive way people step over the monster in the small town.
Best whip pans in the biz…Kahn’s “Bubblegum Bayhem” style whizzes, twists, spins and keeps the visuals…
Brandon Routh, you handsome dawg. This was my most anticipated indie film of the year, and I'm excited to say it delivered on all fronts. The perfect amount of campiness, surprisingly good VFX, and probably one of the best soundtracks of all time.
Almost didn't see this based on all the negative Letterboxd reviews but gave it a chance after hearing some good word of mouth and it ended up being one of my favorites of the festival. Joe Kahn set out to make some PG-13 gateway horror and ended up making a horror comedy so violent he won't allow his own daughter to watch it. Brandon Rouths kicks ass in what I'm hoping is a career revitalizing performance and he does it to one of the greatest soundtrack of all time. This movie fucking rips.
ICK fucking rules.
The Faculty meets Slither in a balls to the walls absurd horror comedy.
A homage to early 2000s (something) with the absolute MOST needle drops ever that each new needle drop made it better.
This one is for the cool kids.
Long live CREED.
fun and dumb, which is what i needed after seeing so many brainy-thinky movies in a row. i had a good time and thats all i wanted!! this crowd was weird as fuck too, y'all gotta get your shit together
Fully, 100% locked in the moment the film opened with "Swing, Swing" by All-America Rejects and 10 minutes of pure, uncut, Columbian white Joseph Kahn goodness.
Pure sugar high filmmaking; everything moves at the speed of sound, from the jokes to the plot to the effects. The jokes are a bit hit or miss (a lot of "look at how weird kids are today" jokes and a whole COVID subtext throughout), but everything is moving at such a clip, you don't have time to stop and think; all you need to do is just sit back, feel the vibes, and get ready for the next mid '00 needle drop (as someone who graduated high school in 2010, this entire thing was just my teenage playlist).
Will very much not be for everyone, but for those who have enjoyed a Kahn joint in the past, this'll be right up your alley.
