I have a new tradition where every two weeks I get drunk with some friends and watch the worst Netflix has to offer.
Hisss wasn't even funny bad, it was just bad. Like I would rather get fucked by a snake than watch this again kind of bad.
a trashy 2002 aesthetic/cgi folktale about a snake lady that murders gross men + a lil dance number, i love it
Somehow, in the late 2000s, Jennifer Chambers Lynch wound up directing Hisss, an Indian and American co-production that crosses creature feature exploitation with Indian folklore. The behind-the-scenes story of how Lynch came to this project has to be even more interesting than the film itself. There is in fact a documentary on the film’s production, Penny Vozniak’s Despite the Gods, from two years later. Hisss has a notorious reputation as a bomb and a bad film, but it’s aged quite well actually, both not being nearly as bad as its detractors claim, and actually benefitting from its expressive, outrageous cheap CGI and digital photography.
At the start of the film, “George States,” an American industrialist (played by American character actor…

Irrfan Khan did so fine…
So very fine, indeed!
Shit: Ratings are numbers and therefore blind.
So powerful, still, FOR US LADIES.
On a personal note: Still waiting for that project including Tim Roth and a bridge mystery, Jennifer told us about after her screening of -> Chained in Hamburg. Simply EF the critics, do it, Jennifer, please?

Film #24 of 31 in my Hoop-Tober 2015 challenge
Filmed primarily in Mumbai, as well as on India's Madh Island and in Periyar National Park, this film is based upon the myth of a snake woman called Naga (Mallika Sherawat), who supposedly carries in her belly the stone of immortality known as Nagmani. A wealthy but terminally ill cancer patient named George States (Jeff Doucette) pays for the capture of a male cobra said to be the Naga's mate. He intends to use it to lure her out of the jungles of Natchi and collect the Nagmani as a ransom to cure his disease.
But Naga doesn't play nice. When she emerges from the foliage and takes a (very sexy)…
How could I not love a movie about a Snake Goddess who slithers through Mumbai swallowing rapists and abusive husbands whole? Hard to spoil a premise like that.... so I've go no idea why LB members on the whole are down on it.
From the ridiculously sublime to the just plain ridiculous.........
I actually watched this yesterday, but this is one of those movies that requires you to take a little time and clear your head after you see it. My final feeling is that it's not a very good film, but it's strange enough and unique enough that there's something There , and enough of the film's flaws feel like they were result of a producer and a director at odds in the post-production process that it's kind of easy to be wistful about the snake-goddess-film we didn't quite end up with here. The cliche would be to talk about Jennifer Lynch, David's daughter, being incredibly comfortable with the uncanny and maybe…
