Trust me, I have seen a lot worse shark movies

I’m a sucker for shark attack flicks, but this one is actually really good. No, seriously!

The acting and characters are interesting, and the 1940s Australian setting really adds some production value. The shark effects are minimal, but they are all practical effects.
Often in shark attack flicks the cartoony cgi takes you out of the story, but not in Fear Below. I was able to get sucked into the atmosphere. 

Speaking of atmosphere, there’s a lot of bugs in Australia. Bugs are constantly buzzing the actors faces. There is one scene where a mosquito is sucking the blood out of the side of actress Hermione Corfield’s face. I just wanted to smack the TV to get it off her. 

Shark Attack!

Competent; different; engaging; gory; interesting; satisfying; sharky; short; solid; tight; well-paced.

Endlich mal ein anderes Setting, nicht immer irgendwelche Mädels in (Hai)not.
Diesmal Australien in den 40ern, mit einem ( selbstverschuldeten)  versenkten Goldschatz, Gangstern und einem gefressigen Wasserbewohner.

Die meisten FX sind practical, unterstützt durch ein wenig CGI, und eine sehr kurze, charmant getrickste (quasi) Margheriti-Gedenkszene (die Fans wissen was ich meine) entlockt ein Schmunzeln. 
Und die alten Taucheranzüge sind ja sowas von Steampunk.

Trotz wenig Budget sauber und spannend in Szene gesetzt, sympathische Figuren , ein stimmiges Tempo, also durchaus ein sehenswerter Genrebeitrag.

Despite being restrained by its low budget at times, Fear Below was a pleasant surprise. The murky underwater shots were unsettling at times, and the use of practical effects on the shark made it surprisingly creepy. The characters were likeable, and the story was interesting. I’ve seen a lot of bad shark movies, so I was glad to finally find a good one.

Can't believe I am going to say this but this is an enjoyably novel variation on the standard hungry, angry shark scenario in all reality. The director Matthew Holmes skillfully blends creature feature with crime thriller, nicely fleshing out the main characters so that we care enough whenever there is shooting or chomping, and that was fun!

So at the end of the day Fear Below is a crazy smartly made shark movie!?!
