Ronald Zehrfeld's beary berlin belly (and his nonchalant presented junk) is defining the level of intimacy that makes Matthias Glasner's very personal family history the precious artefact that it turns out to be.
Depicting German sensibilities, the state of mind of a whole nation, that's the small achievement that Sterben is capable of en passant. without ever recurring of the intergenerational traumata of WW2 and the holocaust this is very palpable as the backdrop of the mental state 80 years later.
the ice cold, innerly dead mother (chillingly played by Corinna Harfouch), the son drowning in his neuroticism, the daughter in her histrionics and alcoholism (both just feeling very close to home there, Eidinger and Stangenberg). a senile, castrated father…
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The long scene in the dining room between a mother and her son is a masterclass worth being revisited and studied. It takes a genius to understand the depth of complexity in nuclear family connection, and it shows, and bursts, throughout the film. We will talk a lot about the film this year. A masterpiece.
Don't watch Ingmar Bergman at Christmas. It'll put you in a bad mood.
Aging parents grappling with terminal illnesses, struggling to bridge the emotional chasm that separates them from their adult children, who bear the weight of their care. A profound melancholy emanates from an impenetrable wall of indifference, painstakingly constructed over years of neglect and emotional suppression. You're drawn into a contemplative silence, observing their attempts to conceal deep-seated pain through a variety of distractions—whether it be the temptation of alcohol, brief romantic flings, bursts of creativity, the turmoil of parenting, or the cogitation of death.
This is my 3,000th review on Letterboxd and, hilariously, my old friend, serendipity, dropped by to mark the occasion. For reasons that will become clear in a minute, this is one of only a handful of those reviews that have not contained a rating - I understand and respect the reasons why people choose not to provide a numerical rating but it helps me manage relativity across genres.
Writer/director Matthias Glasner serves up a scarifying depiction of the Lunies family who take dysfunction to stratospheric levels. Father, Gerd (Hans-Uwe Bauer) has Parkinson’s disease, probably overlaid, given his aggressive outbursts, with Lewy body dementia. Mother, Lissy (Corinna Harfouch) seems to relish his pain and emotional torment (we don’t get a lot…
A movie that felt like taking a deep breath and starting to talk about your problems. In family, in love, in art, physical problems, mental problems, and all of this with a smart and understanding friend who might help you with a joke, with a similar-to-you experience, and just say you the word that you want to hear from them.
I wanted to watch it for months, and it definitely didn't disappoint. All of the poetic digressions throughout the movie, which then connect to the plot in a beautiful way, almost like a harmony.
A movie that is honest with you, It shows you all the troubles of living; sometimes it's really unpleasant, sometimes it warms you up, sometimes…
Einmal Sterben hinten mittig bitte.
