2026 marks the 9th year for the Classic Film Challenge! This challenge was originally created by Christian Alec, then run by Aurora, and I took over in 2022.
Last year's challenge celebrated women in film, so to continue to channel my feelings about current events in positive ways, this year's challenge celebrates how immigrants built Hollywood and made it great.

Without immigrants we would not have the American film industry as we know it. Of the Big Five and Little Three Studios, only one was not founded or co-founded by an immigrant. Executives immortalized in the names of studios, classic performers whose films are loved and remembered to this day, some of the most famous directors, behind-the-scenes people such as Oscar-winning composers, cinematographers, art directors, song writers – immigrants.
Some came to America as children with families seeking new lives, some came for opportunities, some were recruited by the studios, and many fled the Nazis before and during WWII.
Two French immigrants owned the largest pre-Hollywood studio in America. The first person to win multiple Academy Awards and the first to win them back-to-back immigrated from Germany. Three of the actors originating the famous Universal Monsters were immigrants. The banker who financed Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Gone With the Wind immigrated from Italy. The first black man to win an Oscar grew up in the Bahamas. The men and women featured in this challenge are only a small sample – there isn't room to feature them all.
In supreme irony, William Fox – the man whose name graces Fox News – was an immigrant.
